The Warren Historical Society Inc. is concerned with the local history of Warren and the surrounding district, including the towns of Collie and Nevertire. Some Activities for 2009 Our fourth (4th) birthday is coming up at our AGM on Monday, 7th August 2009. It marks the last year in our current five year plan.
Finding a premise to call a home is the only outstanding itme left on that agenda. We are still looking for a premise in the main part of town. There are plenty of vacant offices on the main street that would suit well, any suggestions welcome.
New members are always welcome at $20 per person or $30 for a couple.
History week is from the 5th - 13th September. We will celebrate this year with the launch of a book written by Jack Goddard. Jack was a local in Warren for many years and ran a valuable earthmoving business in the town. The bridge over the Macquarie River at the lower weir is named after him. He has now retired in Gilgandra but will be in attendance for the launch of his book on Sunday, 13th September 2009. The book will be on sale for $25 . Community urged to come along to society gathering Warren Historical Society is planning a partnership with the Dubbo Museum and Cultural Centre to create an exhibit, featuring Warren in the centre to mark the 150th anniversary of the Government Gazette notice of 30th June, 1861 which states, "A site has been fixed upon for a town to be called Warren".
The Dubbo exhibit will feature Warren's history through photographs, artifacts, memorabillia and the stories that show its history. To begin a collection process, the society will have a collection day on the last Friday of each month.
Members of the society will be in th Council Chambers between 10am and 3pm on those days to copy, receive or just sight your photographs and memorabillia. Someone will be available to hear your suggestions, recollections, or stories or to arrange for recording. Don't think your reollections or information are not worth knowing or that your photographs are too poor. Modern technology can restore a great deal. Much has to be written, told and collected before the final selection of a theme and the exhibits that will tell our story. In museum jargon - more means less.
Only through hearing and seeing lots, can we choose the very best to be part of the exhibition. We want your help. It is a Warren community venture.
