Sport & Recreation

Last modified: June 10, 2009 - 12:23 AM

The town of Warren has outstanding sporting and recreational facilities for its size.  After fourteen years of fundraising a Sporting and Cultural Centre Complex was opened in September 1996, by then then Premier - Bob Carr.

The Centre caters for indoor sports including basketball, volleyball, cricket, netball and many recreational games for the youth of Warren to participate in.  The centre is located beside Victoria Oval where football and cricket are played.  There is a mezzanine viewing floor which is an excellent area for meetings, parties and art and cultural exhibitions.  The complex can seat approximately 500 people at any one function.

Other sporting facilities include an excellent 18 hole golf course, bowling club, tennis courts, squash courts, an olympic swimming pool, 2 town ovals, gun club, pony club, polocrosse club and a magnificent racecourse complex.  The racecourse is considered to be one of the best in rural New South Wales, hence Warren being known as the "Randwick of the West".

Fishing on the Macquarie River is a major recreational activity with abundant sites for camping, boating and canoeing.  The National Parks and Wildlife Service organises camping tours in the Macquarie Marshes throughout the year, with people from throught the State travelling to explore the wonders of the Marshes.

Farm-stays are very popular with properties such as Haddon Rig, Webegong and Willie Retreat offering accommodation and tours of their area.

The Visitors Information Centre, located in Burton Street, Warren, offers many local arts and crafts for the visitors.  The Centre provides brochures and information on what to do and see during your stay in Warren.  This Centre is operated by Volunteers from our community and is supported by the Warren Shire Council.

Close to town is the Tiger Bay Wildlife Park.  The park is a natural overflow of the Macquarie River system and is home to many species of birds and aquatic flora.  A walkway along the levee with binoculars is a must for any interested bird watchers.

The River Red Gum Walk in the Macquarie Park is a pleasant tour of both historical and botanical interest.  The walk follows the curve of the Macquarie River through an established parkland, the Macquarie Park.  Sights include "The Stump", of a more than 950 year old river red gum located adjacent to the old Warren Waterhole.  A section of this tree has been restored and is on display at our Visitors Information Centre and an informative pamphlet outlining the route of the walk is also available from the Visitors Information Centre.

For any information call the Visitors Information Centre on (02) 6847 6665 or the Warren Shire Council on (02) 6847 6600.
