Council recently approved the final concept designs for the development of a stunning mural celebrating local sport for the Stafford Street water tower.

With the water tower located near Warren’s sporting precinct, the mural design takes inspiration from some of the activities enjoyed by residents including swimming, cricket, soccer and skateboarding.

Warren Shire Mayor, Councillor Milton Quigley, says the mural concept design was created by Adelaide-based artist Sam Brooks who was chosen from several artists who had responded to Council’s Expression of Interest.

“Given the location of the mural, we decided a sporting theme would best represent the area and provide a sense of inspiration and pride to our community. Artist Sam Brooks’ design really captured this through his use of 3D images,” says Mayor Quigley.

Chairperson of the Warren Public Arts Committee, Councillor Pauline Serdity, is involved in the Stafford Street Water Tower Mural project and says the community response to the concept designs have been positive.

“We recently featured the mural concepts as part of our Local Government Week display and the feedback from residents who attended was fantastic.

“What excites me is that the design is different to any of the murals in neighbouring local government areas. It will undoubtedly be an attraction when visiting the area,” says Councillor Serdity.

Final works are underway to prepare the water tower for the painting of the mural, which will be completed by early next year. Unfortunately, due to illness, Mr Brooks will be unable to paint the mural however his design will be used in collaboration with a different artist. Council is currently finding an artist to bring Mr Brooks designs to life on the water tower.

“We will be working with interested artists to finalise the painting of the mural. Once we have selected an artist that can deliver the style and concept created by Mr Brooks, we hope to start the artistic works on the water tower in November,” added Councillor Serdity.

Funded through the NSW Government’s Country Arts Support Program, the Australian Government’s Drought Communities Grant Extension Program and the Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program Round 3, the Stafford Street water tower mural is set to be an attraction for both residents and visitors to the shire.
