Media Release: Fresh Start For Warren Shire Locals - Post Image

Warren Shire Council Traineeships open doors for locals at every stage of life.

At just 16, Alex Bailey is already on the tools and on track for a career thanks to a four-year Heavy Vehicle Motor Mechanic apprenticeship that keeps him learning, earning and local. Alex is one of the newest recruits supported by Warren Shire Council through the NSW Government’s Fresh Start for Local Government program, and is gaining hands-on experience under the guidance of Workshop Supervisor Jason Boyd.

He’s joined by Katrina Treanor, a young mother returning to work through a traineeship as a Tourism Information Officer at the Warren Visitor Information Centre. Katrina is mentored by Economic Development and Visitation Manager Susie Balogh, and is building skills and confidence in a role that supports her future and her family.

Both are gaining practical experience, earning a wage and staying connected to the community they call home.

“I’ve always liked working with my hands and learning how machines work,” said Alex. “Getting to do that every day while learning a trade and earning a wage is the perfect start for me.”

“Coming back to work after having kids can be daunting,” said Katrina. “This traineeship has given me the confidence to build a career I’m passionate about with great support and flexibility.”

Following the success of these initial placements, Council has now received funding for two more local roles as part of Round 2 of the Program. Applications are now open for:

  • Trainee Administration Officer

  • Trainee Plant Operator

Mayor Greg Whiteley said the Program highlights Council’s promise to support locals through all phases of life, from school leavers to parents rejoining the workforce and residents ready to explore a new direction.

“We want people in Warren to know there is a future for them here,” he said. “Whether you’re starting out or starting over, these roles show that real careers can be built right here in Warren. Close to family, close to community and close to home.”

General Manager Gary Woodman added that the roles are part of a broader commitment to strengthening Warren Shire’s workforce.

“These opportunities come with practical learning and ongoing guidance from our team, helping locals build rewarding careers right here in Warren,” he said.
