As the outbreak of COVID-19 in Western NSW continues, sewage testing has begun in Warren Shire. To alleviate any queries or concerns from the community, Warren Shire Council is providing an outline of the process.

Council is responsible for sample collection, and all COVID-19 testing is performed by external laboratories. This specialised testing is not done by Council.

Warren Shire Council General Manager, Gary Woodman, says this testing program is a proactive response to the evolving COVID-19 situation in neighbouring local government areas.

“The testing program for Warren is another way to help protect the community as it will give us an indication if traces of the virus are detected, and we can take action accordingly.

“As the program is coordinated by NSW Health, it is likely that Council will only be notified if there is a positive test, due to the current high demand for testing in NSW. If a positive sewage detection is found, NSW Health will notify the community and increase their focus on testing,” says Mr Woodman.

Council is not authorised to release details of any test results it receives, and any public announcement will come from NSW Health.

“After such a successful pop-up vaccination clinic earlier this week, with over 620 residents receiving their first COVID-19 vaccination, this sewage testing is yet another support system to respond to the spread of the virus.

“The absence of any announcement from NSW Health regarding the sewage testing for the Shire should be considered as a good situation however it does not mean COVID-19 is not present in our community and everyone should continue to remain vigilant for symptoms and get tested immediately, follow the stay-at-home orders and book a date to vaccinate.

“I understand this is a concerning time, however I assure you Council is constantly monitoring the evolving situation and will keep the community informed,” Mr Woodman added.
